This course will cover two main aspects of creative writing: prose and poetry (one or both, depending on the student’s preference). It is a course that will be offered so that pre-college students who love creative expression can experience their first opportunity to write. Because most high schools don’t offer a Creative Writing class (and those that do so only offer it to upperclassmen), this class gives students an early chance to work on their craft. Students who are interested in exploring other types of creative writing (playwriting) or who are interested in exploring a specific genre of creative writing (comedy, drama, satire) should notify me beforehand so I can incorporate it in the course.
The course will cover several tools that assist in the mastery of language–both creative tools such as metaphors, similes, and alliteration and necessary tools like punctuation, sentence structure, and revision strategies. Beyond the mastery of language, a student will learn to discover and develop his or her own voice–his or her unique perspective on the world, on his or her life, on living. Students can choose to focus on prose or poetry (or both), the in-class material will remain the same, only the homework assignments will change. The course will be 5-6 classes.
