This class covers the art of story writing. This art form is a crucial life skill. In a fantastic article, the Wall Street Journal identified narratives as an effective device for capturing people’s attentions, promoting ideas, and persuading people. Narratives take facts and turn them into stories, thus giving them meaning and presenting readers with the opportunity to vicariously experience an event. Narratives are compelling because they allow for more in-depth understanding of an event than a mere presentation of the facts.
Within this course, students will learn to write engaging narrative that utilize expressive diction and intriguing characters in a sensible chronology that transitions smoothly. This course will be 5 classes. In the first class, students will learn the different elements of a narrative. In the second class, they will learn how to organize a narrative. In the third class, they will learn about critical sentence structures and details and revision strategies. The final two classes will be spent on revision and will consist of drills tailored to each student’s personal point(s) of weakness. Parents are invited (and encouraged) to sit in on the final class or speak with Juliana after each Skype class so that they can better assist their students with assignments throughout the year.
